Prof Siyanbola Tomori was a staff of the Department of Economics, University of Lagos, from 1970 to 2006. He was Acting Head of the Department in 1980/1981 and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, between 1987 and 1991.He was a member of Senate, at different times, where he chaired and served on many University Committees and Boards. He also served as a member of the Governing Council of the University of Lagos between 2000 and 2004.
Prof Tomori had his undergraduate studies at the University of London, 1964-1967 and his post graduate studies at the University of Manitoba, Canada, 1967-1970.
He began his academic career as an Assistant Lecturer in 1970 and rose, thorough the ranks, to a full Professor in 1984. He has published extensively in reputable international and local journals in his areas of specialisation; monetary economics, macroeconomic theory and policy and development economics He has also edited a number of books in his areas of interest.
In professional activities and public service, he served as the President, Nigerian Economic Society, 1989-1990, President, African Economic Association1990-1992, and he was a member of the Governing Council, National Instutute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, 1990-1994.
Prof Tomori was conferred with the Distinguished Fellowship of the Nigerian Economic Society in 2007.
He has served as External Examiner to the Departments of Economics of many Nigerian universities as well as the Universty of Sierra Leone and the University of Swaziland.He has also served as assessor to many of these universities, in professorial appointments and promotions, and served in many interview panels for these professorial posts.
Prof Tomori led and coordinated an international multidisciplinary study on ‘Protecting the Poor from Macro- economic Shocks in Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation and Policy Options’, financed and sponsored by the IMF and the World Bank. He presented, on behalf of the group, the findings of this study at the IMF headquarters in Washington DC in February 2005.
He has participated In many international conferences which took him to four of the continents of the world.
Prof Tomori has also successfully executed consultancy services to a number of international organisations, including the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), United Nations Institute for Economic Development (UN-IDEP), Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), Washington DC, African Project Development Facility (APDF), African Development Bank (AfDB), West African Monetary Institute (WAMI), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), African Training and Research Centre in Administration and Development (CAFRAD), and the Association of African Universities (AAU).
These consultancies activities took him to many countries in Western, Eastern and Southern Africa.
Prof Tomori has also consulted for a number of national institutions, including the National Manpower Board, Federal Ministry of Trade, Federal Ministry of Planning, and the Federal Ministry of Education. Others are the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), National Centre for Economic Management and Administration ( NCEMA) and the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA).
